Post Pathankot Attack:Thaw Froze & What Next ?

The Pathankot attack which claimed lives of  three security personnel and left four suspected Pakistani terrorists dead has yet again vindicated the fact that peace initiatives between the two countries, India and Pakistan, were not palatable to some strong groups there.
The attack was timed by terrorists outfits as it came barely a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprise visit to Raiwind in Lahore to greet his counterpart Nawaz Sharif on latter’s birthday day and his grand daughter’s marriage.
The attack came as a rude shock for the top diplomats who were bracing up for the foreign secretaries level talks in Islamabad in the current month.
The two sides peddling peace initiatives had met in Bangkok much to surprise of many as meeting of the two camps’ National security advisers met secretly . The Thailand talks were bereft of media glare and ground rules were articulated to cement surprise.
The goodwill generated after Modi's visit went for the toss and certainly questions will be asked over utility of talks when across the border terrorism could not be combated.
The BJP led central government will have tough time to sell talks intentions though all parties did not mince words to lend full throttle support to the government in fight against terrorism.
As and when some peace initiatives start bearing fruits such attacks happened. Soon after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee much publicized Bus Yatra to Pakistan .Kargil war had broken in May 1999. He was on the bus ride there in Feb,2,1999.
In July 2001, The then Pak President Pervez Musharraf came for Agra summit and talks failed , and in 2001 Terror attack took place on Parliament.
In  April ,2005, Musharraf visited Delhi to watch cricket match and the two sides resumed high level engagements. In November 2008, 26/11 Mumbai strikes derailed composite dialogue.
In March 2011, then Pak PM Yousuf Raza Gilani visited Mohalai to watch world cup semi final match and two rounds of talks resumed, but in January 2013,Dialogue was suspended after Indian Soldiers were  beheaded along LOC.
In May 2014, Modi invited Nawaz  Sharif for his  swearing in ceremony, but in August 2014 Talks of Foreign Secretaries in Islamabad were called off by India on August 25 as Pak High commissioner Abdul Basit met Kashmiri Separatists  leaders.
In November 2014, Modi and Sharif met in Nepal on sidelines of SAARC meet and in July 2015, they met in Ufa, Russia on the side lines Shanghai cooperation organization summit.
Same month, July 2015, suspected Pak Militants stormed police station in Gurdaspur district ,killing seven people.
In December 2015, NSAs held meetings in Bangkok and late External Affairs Minister Sushma  Swaraj attended heart of Asia Summit in Islamabad. Sushma held talks with Pak PM’s adviser on foreign affairs Sartaz Aziz. The two sides agreed to launch the cooperation dialogue process.
But The Pathankot Attack was timed to sabotage Thaw process and wait and watch situation develops with both the countries deplored the incident and specter of suspicion looms large on peace talks.
