Pandemic infections top 5 million & killed 328,000 globally;India cases surge past 1.12 lakh

More than 4.99 million coronavirus cases, including 328,115 deaths, have been recorded globally this morning with Brazil reporting 1,179 deaths in the last 24 hours and India cases surge past 1.12 lakh.
There is still a long way to go in battling the pandemic, according to director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus Tedros. “It assigns responsibilities for both the WHO [World Health Organization] and its member States, and captures the comprehensive whole of government and whole of society approach we have been calling for since the beginning of the outbreak”, he said.
He pointed out that in the last 24 hours, WHO had received reports of 106,000 cases, “the most in a single day since the outbreak began”, with nearly two-thirds in just four countries.
“We’re very concerned about the rising numbers of cases in low and middle-income countries”, flagged the WHO chief.
Some new hot spots like Belarus, South Africa, and a steep spike in cases in India have emerged as fresh concerns while many countries have rushed for the lifting of the lockdowns or ordering broad spectrum relaxations.

India has recorded 5,609 coronavirus cases in a 24-hour period, data from the Union Health Ministry showed this morning, with 132 deaths reported in the same period. This takes the total number of cases to 1.12 lakh, with 3,435 deaths linked to the virus.
All airports & air carriers are being informed to be ready for operations from 25th May; SOPs for passenger movement is also being separately issued by the civil aviation ministry
The railways today said bookings for 200 regular passenger trains will open from 10 am tomorrow on the IRCTC website or through its app. These trains will run from June 1 and include both air-conditioned and non-AC coaches, the railways said in a statement, a day after it said only non-AC passenger trains would run.
Migrant workers continued to suffer in want of speedy and safe travel to home states.
The country’s recovery rate – the number of patients who have successfully fought the illness – stood at 39.62 percent this morning. 42,298 people have recovered, the Health Ministry said.
Tamil Nadu has become the state with the most number of coronavirus cases after Maharashtra. The southern state reported 688 cases on Tuesday, taking the total to 12,448. Until Tuesday, Gujarat had the second-highest number of coronavirus cases. Gujarat now has 12,140 cases.

China’s president, Xi Jinping has said his country would support a “comprehensive review” of the Covid-19 pandemic after the outbreak has been brought under control.
Nepal today reported its two deaths while its cases touched 402 marks. Vietnam has reported 324 cases and no death against Taiwan’s reportage of 440 cases and seven deaths to date. Bhutan has reported 21 cases and no deaths.
South Africa has reported 18003 cases and 339 deaths. Likewise, Belarus has reported 32426 cases and 179 deaths in the WHO’s European region that covers 54 countries. In the region. Armenia has clocked 83 percent swing in the last 14 days vis-a-vis cases in the previous 14 days. It has reported 4,823 cases and 60 deaths.
The Russian Federation has reported 308705 coronavirus positive cases with 2,972 deaths.
Brazil has also touched a grim milestone of having more than 291,579 cases with about 18559 deaths. Mexico has reported 56594 cases and 6090 deaths.
After confirmation of cases of COVID-19 infection have been identified in a vast and overcrowded refugee camp in Bangladesh, UN humanitarians have announced additional measures and appealed for funds to prevent the disease from spreading.
The US has so far reported 1,551,853 cases, and 93439 deaths, according to John Hopkins University. The New York state death toll is the highest with over 28,636 deaths. In the US, as three million people claimed unemployment allowances, the figure now hovers around 36.5 million.

China which was the epicenter previously has reported a total of 84,063 cases and 4638 deaths. Fresh cases have started coming up in China too. Mass testing has started in Wuhan city. South Korea has reported 11,122 cases and 264 deaths.
According to Johns Hopkins University today, a total of 4,996,472 COVID -19 positive cases are there across the world, and another 328,115 people lost .lives.
The UK has reported a total of deaths 249,618 cases and 35,786 deaths so far Singapore has 29,364 cases and 22.deaths.In Norway, there are 8281 cases and 234 deaths.
In Pakistan, the total number of 45,898 cases is reported so far with 985 deaths. In Afghanistan, the case figures stand at 8145 and 187 deaths.
In Saudi Arabia, 62545 cases surfaced with 339 deaths. Iran has reported a total of 7183 deaths and 126,949 cases. In UAE, The death toll is 233, and cases are 226004.
In Bangladesh, over 26738 cases were reported and it has lost 386 lives. In Sri Lanka, 1027 cases came into light with nine deaths only.
In the WHO’s European region of 54 countries, a total 1,911,994 cases were reported so far with 168,047 deaths.
Spain has so far reported 232037 cases, and 27,778 deaths, while Italy’s death toll remained at 32,330 and cases mounted to 227,364.
In Germany, there are 178,473 cases and over 8144 deaths. France has reported 181,700 cases and 28,135 deaths against Japan’s 16367 cases and 768 deaths.
Sweden has reported more than 3831 deaths and 31523 cases. Canada has reported 81575 cases and 6150 deaths.
WHO has warned about 1, 90,000 people may die in the African region if adequate steps were not taken for the containment.
A report from Brazzaville said Eighty-three thousand to 190 000 people in Africa could die of COVID-19 and 29 million to 44 million could get infected in the first year of the pandemic if containment measures fail, a new study by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa finds. The research, which is based on prediction modeling, looks at 47 countries in the WHO African Region with a total population of one billion.
