ATTN : Millennials ! Use Technology as Salt in Lentil Soup

 By Neeraj Bajpai

Strong winds were buffeting a humongous white tent where an avalanche of thought provoking sentences was quietly pummeling minds of a sea of humanity.
At Kanha Shanti Vanam on the outskirts  of Hyderabad recently,
A  Simpleton, clad in yellow kurta, was sailing against tide of technology intensively contemporary life styles, and was profusely batting for use of technology like a salt in a lentil soup.
Standing upright in front of a motely assembly of about 35,000 people who had just finished an hour long mediation to mark Birth anniversary of The Ramchandra Mission’s revered master Parthasharthy who had passed away three years ago, Senior Bureaucrat Laxmi Narayana, IPS was speaking with conviction while articulating his perception of life on the harsh ground realities.
He spoke about tension ridden lives of people, caught in cleft stick of daily pressures and pulls both at working places and domestic fronts and panacea for such ills, assailing the international community.
It was the morning of July 23, 2017 and  Master Kamlesh Patel, current head of The Mission ,which is spearheading global programme of heartfulness meditation, wanted this civil officer to share his thought process with the gathering which was overflowing with young ,many of them were IT and other professionals from all walks of life.
The assembly at the Kanha center of the mission had rainbow presence of various castes, creeds, regions and countries on the occasion.
The Bureaucrat, currently posted as Additional Director General of Police, Mumbai, unveiled a prescription for people to rid themselves of tensions while instilling virtues in children and discharging their duties as parents to make the generations strong and healthy.
Asking youth to make a definite plan of value addition in their personalities, he recalled famous story of America’s Basketball player Michael Jordan.
When the player was very young his father summoned him and handed over a one Dollar worth Jersey. He commandeered him to sell that in two Dollars. The perplexed boy strained nerves to accomplish the task and went to the market place with a friend who used to play guitar. The duo performed with Jersey at the center of attraction. A customer emerged from gathered onlookers and bought that at the prescribed price. The elated boy ran to father with two dollar bills as a trophy.
The father had a different plan and he gave him another jersey and asked to sell that with a tag of one hundred bucks. The young boy wondered how could it be, but did not give up. He painted Mickey Mouse cartoons on the Jersey to capitalise  Kids’ craze. No sooner, he landed in the market, the Jersey was sold off on the desired price.
Next time, His unrelenting father convinced with latent talent of his son’s cutting edge abilities, presented him a jersey and said it should be sold at a whopping price 500 Dollars. That was the challenge but Casablanca in the boy decided to carry out the orders. He toyed with an idea while flipping through morning newspaper reports that American Pop Singer Michael Jackson is staying in a hotel in his township. He set himself at the gates of the hotel.
As Michael Jackson emerged from the hotel, he spotted the boy with the jersey. The singer casually asked him why he was there. The young boy handed over him a marker and sought his autograph on the jersey. The moment he got jersey signed by the world famous singer, he went to market flaunting that like a plaque on the sale. He soon got the desired price.
Narrating the story, the senior cop said it was the typical case of value addition. Each time, value was added to the jersey ,its price shot up.
In the same way, each youth should explore ways to add value to their personalities on daily basis. One day, they will realise, he or she is a different personality.

He asked them to imbibe spirit of taking their mental selfie every day to assess growth. They should try mental selfie should be brighter with every passing day with value addition. They should nurse ambition of having their own photographs in text books rather than pasting and enjoying their selfies on Facebooks and other social media handles.

Laxmi Narayana said recently he visited a school and interacted with students. He asked them how many of them had face book friends and a student of class eight standard said he had 1000 friends. He enquired how he managed them.
The boy innocuously replied that he spends two hours daily on face book and says good morning to everyone, and this is how the list is swelling.
The speaker ,in return, advised him to post mail on the Facebook that his school had hiked the fee by Rs.50, 000 and his father could not afford that so each one of them can share the burden a bit.
The student complied the advice, but after a few days he told Laxmi Narayana that the list had shrunk and hardly a few give reply to him now. The student realised the reality. The speaker advised youth to have limited friends and felt even four true friends who could read his face can be the real ones.
He said the technology should be used like a salt in lentil soup He advised youth to read books daily rather then remained glued to computer screens and if they develop habit of reading good and healthy books, they will soon find that their stature is rising. And, people will be commenting Look here! , A moving encyclopedia is passing through.
He advised women with folded hands to impart best virtues. For example, they can add one additional bread to their Kids' tiffin every day with an advice share that with any classmate or schoolmate who could not bring the lunch box because of any reason –like his or mother was ill that day.  This drill instills a feeling of sharing in kids and it will remain with them as lifelong virtue.
He recalled teachings of   former President Late APJ Kalam who was advising to youth to create center of excellence around them by following four mantras .Each one should respect parents, teachers, read good books and develop good and healthy friendships.
The speaker asked youth to nurse ambition that they should develop personality in a manner that one day he should address the gathering as chief guest in the institution from he or she had passed out, parents should be proud of them to bring laurels to the family, city and nation.
Rather than running after celebrities for autographs, they should nurse a dream that those celebrities should pine for his autograph while standing in the queue.
He said The BMI (body mass index) should be less for each individual, but here (The Mission) participators should have maximum BMI (body, mind and Intellect) because of meditation.
He told the assembly that the mediation works wonders and if they want to up check its efficacy vis-à-vis adverse impact of   electronic gadgets like mobile phones, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi etc, they should place plants in different environs for a month . Later on, they will find that the at the place of mediation, the plants’ growth would have been most healthy.
He said Youth should take pledge of making the country as best  in the world. The whole world should say country should be like India and citizen should be like Indian. APJ  Kalam had that vision and was  always envisioning to accomplish the goal by 2020 when the international community should feel proud to sport Jerseys emblazoned with word  “India”.
Drawing an analogy, he narrated another story. A street beggar was sitting on a small wooden case seeking alms from passersby  for 30 years .One day,a man came and enquired whether he ever bothered to check what was their inside well chiseled wooden box .
The beggar said he was focused on seeking alms for years and he had nothing to do what was inside. The man insisted and gave a hundred rupees note to him to open the case. To his utter surprise when the lid was removed, the case was full of jewels, golden coins, silver bars and diamonds cut diamonds. Human beings are like that, they are full of all potential and only thing one has to introspect and rip open hidden treasure to make society and nation strong.
According to him, each country has got its own USP (Unique selling proposition) Like in US, the government always tries to find ways to improve lifestyle of common people and that is their USP , in UK, It has different …  USP ,and India’s USP is spirituality.  He said seeing god in other individual and work with dedication and honesty, is the spirituality.

He aired concerns over rising cases  of suicides and other social tensions and said In civil services, officers were supposed to undergo annual medical examination .he took such tests and medical experts parroted same question whether he was having deep sleep or not . According to them, if you have mental peace then only any individual can have sound sleep and health. He said meditation imparts mental peace – key to success and health.
Winding up, He commended spirit of humanity in the sea of humanity in Kanha Centre and said he was moved by way volunteers were working with dedication may it be in massive kitchens, toilets or any other services
