  5. I fully endorse the Government of India initiative of setting of 10 world class universities in India. But let it not make the same mistake as in implementing the 100 smart cities.
We should establish these 10 world class universities as minarets of excellence and lighthouse of academic and research excellence. This would require a strong connect to the industry and corporates and sensitivity to live problems of the local and global society.
Such world class universities should attract right from day one the initial genes of the faculty from the best on the world including the best from India and it's NRI deshpora.
Let such Universities flourish on the strength of the tripod of seamless integration of education with research and innovations and provide knowledge and technology breakthrough to empower India and the global community to achieve altars of human excellence in action.
The universities in India shall gain immensely from such a rise of world class Universities in India and shall themselves rise to and surpass the benchmark of quality and excellence.
India is on the threshold of major opportunity to redefine and recast it's Higher education to make it more relevant and tune to hitherto unscaled frontiers of human wisdom.

  12. Government of India needs to treat public funded and private universities at par. Being a public funded university does not necessarily mean that professors are great scholars and everything is fair. Similarly, being a private university doesn't mean that professors are useless and everything is unfair. This is reflected in the approach followed by the important bodies like NAAC or NBA inviting subject experts mostly or almost always from public funded universities or institutions only. Even UGC and AICTE do the same when it comes to constituting various expert committees. This disparity needs to be removed.

Everyone should be assessed independently, irrespective of being from a public funded or a private university. No one can deny the contributions made by private institutions like BITS Pilani, TISS, Manipal Group of Institutions, XLRI, and others in the private sector. At the same time, we have great institutions like Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Bombay University, old IITs, old IIMs, Indian Institute of Science and others in the public sector. AIU should develop a depository/repository of scholars based on contributions in their respective disciplines, and handover the same to the competent authorities in the central and state governments. A professor is believed to be honest till he/she is with a public funded university and the same person is seen with an eye of suspicion as soon as he/she joins a private university. This disparity needs to go now.

I am confident that Dr. PB Sharma will take up this issue with the Government of India and get it resolved for the benefit of the nation. My observations are based on my experience of having served the central government, state government and private institutions/universities in the last 40 years.

    1. Thank you Dr Dhar for raising an important issue. I fully agree with you , we need to provide a level playing field to public and private universities and allow them to compete and flourish in an environment of academic and research excellence. This is precisely what I said at Vigyan Bhawan during the recent meet of VCs and was happy to note that the Hon'ble Minister of HRD also shared the same feeling.
So we are moving towards good times. But all of us have to put up our very best to meet and greet the challenges at hand and make Mother India proud of our efforts and initiatives.
I thank you for your warm greetings and look forward to creating an effective connect to pool together the brainwaves of the VCs of India in AIU.
      Warm regards.
      Prof PB Sharma
